Question
Rabbi,
Why Mizonot when rice is not one of the 5 grains that has the possibility of rising with yeast into bread?
Thus it should be pri adamah?
Thank you,
Menachem
Answer
The Gemara establishes that the proper blessing for rice is Borei Minei Mezonot, but does not explain why. The Rishonim suggest that the reason is that is considered "mazon" (a staple), and it is satisfying, like the five grains.
Incidentally, the proper blessing for eating raw kernels of any of the five grains is borei peri ha-adama.
