Question
How may I get to know and understand the traditional way of life the Jewish people have and if I wish to study more where do I begin? I have read the Talmud and a book by Ethan Cohen regarding the Talmud. I am seeking to know our Creator God Yahweh. Thank you for your time and consideration in my question. My deepest respect and regards, Stella.
Answer
Shalom Stella, Thank you for writing to us. Firstly, let me send you every blessing for success in your endeavor to connect to G-d’s truth and His Torah. I’m guessing here (and please feel free to correct me if I guess wrong), that you are not Jewish. If so, even before you continue with your studies, let me stress that it’s great that you learn about Judaism, but you should know from the outset that Judaism has no desire for you to become Jewish. We firmly believe that all mankind has a place in serving G-d in this world (and the world to come!) no matter if they are Jewish or not. So, enjoy your learning, and may you be blessed to grow in being a great person who brings only good and G-dliness into the world – but feel no pressure to do so as a Jew! (A non Jew who follows the word of G-d is called a “Noachide” and there are “7 Noachide laws” that you might want to look up). [If you are Jewish, then it’s a different story! But we’ll save that for another time.] Where to learn more? Firstly, the best place is with real live Jews! Do you live near an Orthodox community? Or know any religious Jews? In general they are pretty open about sharing our way of life after they see you are sincere in your questions. So, feel free to reach out to someone you know or who lives near you. Next, there are many great websites, as well as our yeshiva.co site – try googling “Machon Meir” or “Chabad” for starters. As for books, try the Tanach (Jewish Bible) with standard commentaries, and the Jewish prayer book, called a Siddur. Please feel free to write back with more questions and comments – Blessings.
