Question
Hello!! Im a reform Jew who doesnt eat pork, but recently I got kicked out and my mom doesnt have enough money to buy me food, since shes trying to find a house, pay a deposit and debt. We live in a motel, but the only food we were given when we were kicked out was pork, and waffles and bread. I have to eat a certain amount of food or Ill pass out and Ive been hospitalized, because I weighed 95 pounds. I tried staying away from any unkosher food and stuck to fish and diary along with eggs, but I dont have that anymore...so I ate the pork. Was what I did wrong? And will I be punished?
Answer
Shalom,
Thank you for your question. Firstly, may you have many blessings for physical and spiritual health. And monetary stability.
It’s hard to judge your situation from afar – but you are correct in thinking that in life threatening situations (and being hospitalized sounds like such a situation), where there is no alternative, one is not only allowed to eat non kosher food, but obligated to do so.
I hope and pray that in the future you are able to eat well and plentifully, with a kosher diet.
Blessings.
