Question
Hello! I myself am not Jewish, would it be seen as disrespectful if I touched & kissed a Mezuzah? I have seen my Jewish friends do it as they pass one in their homes. Would it be seen as disrespectful if I did the same since I am not Jewish?
Answer
Shalom,
Thank you for your question – and your concern and respect for the Jewish people. It’s lovely to see such thoughtfulness.
It is permitted for a non-Jew to touch and kiss a mezuzah, as many Jewish people do. You should be aware that this is not an obligation – but rather a long standing custom that many Jews have. Also, the idea is that when touching and kissing the mezuzah a person recalls the unity of G-d and His providence over all our lives, including every time we leave or enter a house.
Blessings.
