Question
Hi, I am currently in NY, I have to travel to Noumea, New Caledonia for Hanukah, I wanted to know what is the halacha for traveling in this period of time to not miss a day of Hannuka.
I am a woman so I don’t know if I have the same obligations as men to light the candles.
More information:
-Sunday 10dec (4th candle of Hannuka) 6 pm flight from JFK
-stopover in New Zeland: Tuesday morning at 8:55 am
-landing the same day in Noumea.
I'll skip the Monday night candle because of the flight
What is the right thing to do?
Thank you
Answer
Women are fully obligated to light Chanukah candles the same as men, because women were included in the miracle of Chanukah.
When traveling you can fulfill the obligation of lighting the candles with your husband or any other family member lighting at home and having you in mind.
If you don’t have anyone lighting for you at home, you can light an electric flashlight Menorah on the plane. If it works on Incandescent light bulbs, you can even recite the blessings according to some great Halachic authorities.
