Question
Dear Rabbi, I am a ben Noach. When I climbed the Etna, I took some rocks (solidified lava) as souvenir. This is an example, but for example another time I took a rock from another place etc. I discovered that it is forbidden according to the laws of my country lest people damage the landscape. So what is the teshuvah for this? Must I bring back the rock on the Etna? I do not think that the damage I did is so evident.
Thank you for the answer
Answer
Based on your description it does not seem to be considered theft, rather it is a violation of state law ruled in order to protect the landscape. Returning the rocks to the mountain is meaningless and therefore there is no need to return them unless there is an explicit law that requires people to return the rocks to the site.
A transgression against the laws of the state is included in the Noachide commandment of Justice. Therefore, one should repent for this transgression.
Repentance includes the following steps: Leaving the sin. Regretting one’s wrong action in the past. Confession Before God. Acceptance for the Future never to commit the sin ever again.
